HP completes acquisition of Samsung's print division

03 November 2017

In September 2016 we covered the announcement that HP Inc. had acquired Samsung's print division.  The process was to be accretive - bit by bit - and this process has now been concluded.

Samsung hived off all its printing assets into "S-Printing Solutions," and this is the entity which has changed hands.  The deal has now been agreed by regulatory authorities in South Korea and the USA.

Samsung's massive manufacturing capabilities, its 1300 researchers and boffins and its 6500 patents are now part of HP.

Over this last year, we have been able to see how HP sees the future for the printing industry, and it has become even clearer how the ex-Samsung South Korean print manufacturing resources are going to be key to HP's success.  HP's stated intention is to disrupt the $55 billion copier industry.  So far, we are seeing three strategies:
  1. The innovative PageWide machines bring inkjet costs and other advantages to play against "traditional" toner-based MFPs.
  2. South-Korean production facilities' sheer scale, and the S-Printing designs should reduce prices and facilitate IT industry support models.
  3. Both HP worldwide and their new South Korean colleagues have proven track records in high-end electronics - and they are exploiting this step advantage to the full by leading the printing industry with the most advanced hardware security currently available.
As we ignite a renaissance in printing, we’re thrilled to bring together the industry’s best and brightest talent,” said Dion Weisler, President and CEO, HP Inc. “Together, we will build on more than 30 years of print leadership to accelerate our strategy, disrupt new market opportunities, and provide our customers and partners with unique and highly innovative print solutions."
